ATSC 113    Applied Meteorology
Weather for Sailing, Flying & Snow Sports

Exam Tips

Your exam performance is not a measure of your value as a human being.  It is just a speed-bump in the road of life.

Don't stress.  The UBC Exam Schedule webpage has tips on how to do your best on exams.  https://students.ubc.ca/enrolment/exams/exam-schedule

All Exams:

1) Exams will cover only the meteorological concepts and their associated effects on aviation, snow-sports, or sailing as listed in the Learning Goals.   Here is where you can find all the learning goals and associated content:
2) Exams will NOT cover the case-studies.  For example, nothing on the first midterm will be about the particular airplane, the pilot, the route, the outcome, or the specific weather conditions for those specific cases.  Similarly, the other exams will not cover the case-study specifics for the snow-sports or sailing.   Instead, focus on the general meteorological concepts covered in Step 4 of all modules AND their effects on aviation/snow-sports/sailing in general.   You can find a consolidated list of meteorological concepts at the web site mentioned in exam tip 1 above.

3) The midterm and final exam will have questions similar to the quizzes: multiple choice or true/false (having only one best answer).

4) Focus your studies on the LEARNING GOALS.

5) If you want, take advantage of the Canvas Discussion Board before the exam (not during the exam).

Midterm Exams:

1) You will find a link to the online midterm exam on UBC Canvas.  You will have a window of roughly 2 to 3  days within which to start the midterm exam (see the Schedule web page).  But once you start the exam, you will must finish it in one sitting within the 50-minute time limit.  You are allowed only one attempt to write the exam.
2) You cannot "pause" the timer.  So please do all of your studying, review, and preparation BEFORE you start the midterm exam, and then write the online exam in one sitting within the time limit. If you have to leave the website, or if your internet connection fails, then you can rejoin your exam in progress (assuming you have saved it), but the timer will NOT pause while you are offline.  So be sure that you have a good internet connection, and have studied and are prepared to write the exam, before you start the exam in UBC Canvas.

3) The online midterm exams are individual exams, NOT group exams.  Again, please focus your studies on the Learning Goals.

Final Exam:

1) Final Exam: Includes all themes:  Flying,  Snow,  Sailing  and Applied Weather.
FOCUS YOUR STUDIES on the learning goals:
https://www.eoas.ubc.ca/courses/atsc113/home/learning_goals.html

2) See the other exam tips at the start of this web page, and focus your studies on the Learning Goals.

3) The final exam is a proctored (invigilated) exam.  All the questions are multiple choice (only one best answer).

4) The exam has 90 total questions, split roughly equally between flying, snow-sports, and sailing weather, and with a few questions on the applied module (theme 12).

5) You are allowed one crib sheet in the exam. The crib sheet can be no larger than letter size (8.5 X 11 inches). The crib sheet can be printed or hand-written on both sides (double-sided). No other hardcopy notes are allowed during the exam.

6) You will need to study and review all the Learning Goals as you prepare for the final exam.  This takes time and energy, so plan ahead.  Study for this final exam as you would for any other course.

7) All students will be required to bring their official UBC Student ID card.  The instructors and TAs will check your ID cards while you write the exam.

8) Details of the exam date and time will be emailed/announced to all students during the middle of the term, as provided to us by UBC Enrolment/Exam Services.

9) See the Evaluation web page to see the points you earn for the final exam.  Don't forget that you must pass (score of 50% or greater) the final** AND have an overall average course grade of 50% or greater to pass this course.

10) The final exam is closed book, however, students are allowed one crib sheet (see number 5).

** Students sometimes ask why they must pass the final exam.  The reason is that there is no way for us to know whether the registered student or someone else did the online work, quizzes, and midterm exams. We check student ID during the final to ensure the registered student is writing the exam.
