Guide
At present, the KompoZer program does not
do a good job of publishing (i.e., uploading) your local web site from
your local PC to a server computer. So don't even try using the
Publish button in KompoZer.
Instead, we will use a separate file transfer protocol (ftp) program called FileZilla to to this on your Windows computer. (A good alternative program for PCs is winscp. If you are a Mac user, CyberDuck is a nice ftp program to use.)
After you have finished creating your web page locally on your
computer using KompoZer, then follow the instructions below to upload it.
Later, if your revise your local web page using KompoZer, then you
will need to re-upload all your revised or new local files to the
server again (following the same instructions below).
Instructions for uploading your web page to the server
- From KompoZer, save your work.
- From the list of programs on your computer (click on the Start
button at bottom left on screen), find the program called FileZilla.
- If it doesn't already exist, make a shortcut to FileZilla on your desktop, by dragging the program to your desktop.
- Run (double click) the FileZilla program from your desktop.
.
- From FileZilla's File menu, get the Site Manager.
.
In the Site Manager Window, create a new Remote Site:
- Click on the New Site button.
- Type in "eidolon" (without the quotes) in the highlighted name in the left frame under My Sites.
- Host: type in: "eidolon.eos.ubc.ca" (without the quotes).
(do NOT change the port number from the default number that appears)
- Server Type: SFTP using SSH
- Logon Type: Normal
- User: (enter in all UPPERCASE your user name for this computer lab -- the one you received when you paid your lab fee)
- Password:
Enter your password for this lab (or if you are using your own
laptop, enter the password assigned by George Hicks for use on
"eidolon").
- Click OK to save it, which exits you from the Site Manager window.
- Quit the FileZilla program.
.
Connect to the Remote Site - Run FileZilla again.
- Click-hold
on the Site-Manager Icon (at left edge of tool bar), and select
"eidolon" from the pop-down menu. (The first time you do this,
it might ask
you about the security certificate for this site. If so, select
"Always Trust".)
- Enter your password if prompted (the original
password you were assigned for the EOSC computer lab this year, or the
one assigned to you by George Hicks)
.
In the Main FileZilla Window, upload your files to the server:
- In the Local Site frame at the left middle, find your Z drive,
and double click on your "website" folder to view a list of the files and
other folders inside.
- For all the files that you want to be on your web page, drag them
from your Local Site filename window (at BOTTOM left) into the Remote Site window (at BOTTOM right). Tips:
- From the left frame, do NOT drag the local folder that you called "website", but instead drag
all the files and folders from inside that "website" folder.
- To the right frame, do NOT drag the files into any other
folders, unless that is what you really want to do. To find some
non-folders, scroll down the right window before dragging into it.
- From the FileZilla toolbar, select the Disconnect icon (the one with the red "X" through it).
- Exit FileZilla.
-done-
Troubleshooting:
- If this doesn't seem to work, be sure that your main home page "index" file name is all lower case. Namely: "index.html", NOT "Index.html" or "INDEX.html".
- Make sure you user name that you use to access eidolon is all UPPERCASE.
- On the "eidolon" computer, we have set it up to use the original
username and original password that was assigned to you when you paid
your lab fee. If you changed your password for the computer lab,
that is fine. But just remember your old password too, because
the old one is what you will use for accessing "eidolon".
- When you dragged the files from your local site to the remote
site, did you drag the correct files. Also, did you deposit them
in the right place on the remote site?
Instructions for viewing your web site
Any browser can now view your web site from the URL address:
http://eidolon.eos.ubc.ca/~[your EOS lab user name goes after the tilda]
Or you can access your web page from the "Students" link near the top of the ATSC 212 web page.
