ATSC 212
Homework 1 - Web Authoring - Part 1
[Hint: see a copy of the in-class demo, to sharpen the skills you learned during lab.]
Assignment
- Put the following inside your "business" folder:
- Create your own logo (using some other graphics program) and invent a business name for your mock business.
- Explore
some of the other formatting features in KompoZer, such as how to add a
background image to your web page, or how to set a colour for the
background, etc.
- Create your own new template for this
business. Format this template to attract customers to your
business. Use your business name and your logo. Before you
create this template, think about what common info you want on all your
business web pages, and which info will need to be different on the
different web pages. It helps to first design your whole web site
by sketching the web pages on pieces of paper. Namely, think
before you code.
- Create 3 or more web pages from this new template. Use the following file names:
- index (this is your home page for your mock business)
- contactus (a separate web page with contact information for your mock business)
- XXX
(1 or more web pages of forecasts, products, services, gallery or
other items appropriate for your business. Replace XXX with a
filename appropriate to your own items.)
- Make links between all your mock business pages (see if you can create
the links in the template). It is especially important to have links
from your "index" (home) page of this business to your other business
pages.
- In your "[YourName]-resume" folder, finish creating your online resume, and formatting it to look nice.
- Similar
to what we did in class for "weather", create a "favorites" folder
inside your "website"folder, and then inside the "favorites" folder
create an "index" (home) web page that shows your favorite photographs
or links to your favorite web sites. (This favorites web page
does not need to be related to weather, but instead could relate to
physics, geography, engineering, or any other interests or hobbies.)
Make your favorites page have a nice appearance. You can add
other web pages if needed inside your "favorites" folder. Make
this be a page that you would like to use yourself. (For example,
my favorites web pages puts all my favorite weather-forecast links in
one place, to make it easier for me to look at weather maps and
forecasts.)
- On
your overall "index" (home page) file in the "website" folder, create
a link to your new "favorites" folder. (You should aready have links to
your "resume" and
"business" folders, from our previous lab demo. The "glossary"
item on your home page is still unlinked -- we will use it next week.)
- Test
your web pages on your local computer, to be sure that all links work
and the pages appear the way you want. Fix and re-test, as needed.
- Upload everything to the eidolon server.
- Use your web browser to view and check all your web pages to be sure that all links are working. Hints:
- Often, if the uploaded links don't work, it is because you forgot to check the "URL
is relative to page location" check box when you created the link in
KompoZer. This "relative" attribute is important in order for
your uploaded "index" files to link to your uploaded
other files. Otherwise, the web page tries to always link to the
files on your local computer in the computer lab, which it can't find.)
- If
you link to a folder (rather than a file), be sure that your folder has
an "index" file in it, which is the file that will automatically open
when a web browser accesses that folder.
- If
you think you did everything right with your links and web pages and
uploaded the corrections to eidolon, but the corrected/changed files
are not appearing on your browser, then don't forget to hit the
"refresh" button on your browser, to force it to view your changes
rather than viewing old outdated copies of your web pages.
- If your web page needs repair, then on your LOCAL machine fix
the bad parts, and then re-upload the fixed files to "eidolon".
Be sure to check again, and repeat the fix/test/upload/check cycle until
your web page is perfected.
Evaluation:
Your completed online:
(1) Resume, (2) Favorites (or other) web pages, and (3) Business,
uploaded to the assigned server, by
the end of Monday (11:59 pm) next week, for everyone in the class to view.
Will be marked on timeliness, completeness, functionality,
appearance/style.
The file structure on your local web site should be:
- website (a folder)
- index.html
- [YourName]-resume (a folder)
- index.html
- any image files (only if needed)
- any other of your own html resume pages you link to (only if needed)
- favorites (a folder)
- index.html
- any image files (only if needed)
- any other of your own html pages you link to (only if needed)
- business (a folder)
- index.html
- contactus.html
- any image files (only if needed)
- any other html pages you link to (only if needed)
The
resulting file structure that you upload to the "eidolon" server should
have all of the above except the outermost "website" folder. Only the files on "eidolon" by the deadline will be marked,
so don't forget to upload your work from your local site before the due
date of this assignment. Your local files on your "computer lab"
computers will not be marked.
If
you are having difficulties, try getting help from your classmates by
posting you question on the course Discussion page in Vista. Or
email a question to the TA.
