Postdoctoral Researcher in Large-Scale Atmospheric Dynamics - University of Bergen and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research

There is an opening for a postdoctoral researcher (2 years) in large-scale atmospheric dynamics at the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. The position is connected to a project on "Dynamics of Arctic-Midlatitude Teleconnections: Mechanisms, robustness and tropical modulation" funded by the Research Council of Norway.

Assistant Professor in Petrology - Department of Earth Sciences, University of Toronto

The Department of Earth Sciences, University of Toronto, is seeking an outstanding individual for a tenure-stream appointment on St. George campus at the rank of Assistant Professor. The appointment is in the fields of metamorphic and igneous petrology and high-temperature geochemistry applied to Earth materials, and will commence July 1, 2017.

PhD Student in Geology - University of Oklahoma

The University of Oklahoma is seeking applicants fo ra PhD student position at the University of Oklahoma (Norman, OK) to work on a joint project led by Dr. Megan Elwood Madden (low-temperature geochemistry), and Dr. Lynn Soreghan (sedimentary geology and paleoclimatology). This research will investigate geochemical and sedimentological aspects of weathering in recent sediments from Antarctic and similar global environments, aimed at ultimately investigating implications for global carbon cycling.

PhD Student in Eolian Processes and Climate Variability - Baylor University

A PhD studentship is available in fall 2017 to study historic and prehistoric records of drought induced eolian activity on the Great Plains, USA. Competitive funding is available for up to 5 years on this project. Deadline for graduate applications is January 15, 2017, but an early submittal is advised. Research is focused on better understanding atmosphere-land surface interactions through changes in dust emissivity.

Student should have a strong background in GIS/remote sensing, sedimentology, stratigraphy, pedology, paleoclimatology, geochronology and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a large research group. Students across the geosciences and environmental sciences are encouraged to apply.

PhD Students in Ice Cores - University of Rochester

The Ice Core Lab at the University of Rochester has an opening for a PhD student. The lab's work uses ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica to study past environmental change, with the goal of better understanding the Earth's natural climate system.

Some examples of the Ice Core Lab's current and possible research projects include:

  • Understanding past changes in atmospheric methane during natural climate warming events
  • Using carbon-14 produced by cosmic rays in glacial ice to understand past changes in cosmic ray bombardment intensity and related changes in solar activity
  • Using ice core measurements of carbon monoxide and its isotopes to understand past changes in the chemical reactivity of the global atmosphere

Masters and PhD Students in Paleoclimatology  - RED Lab, University of Utah

Working in association with archaeologists from the Dugway Proving Ground, the RED Lab (Records of Environment adn Disturbance Lab) at the University of Utah has been conducting research on the paleoenvironment of the West Desert region of Utah. Masters and PhD research opportunities are available on this project for fall 2017.

CMOS Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarships

The Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (CMOS) offers undergraduate and graduate scholarships in atmospheric sciences, meteorology, climate, oceanography, and related fields (e.g., mathematics, hydrology, limnology). The undergraduate scholarships offer $1,000 and $1,500. The graduate scholarship is $10,000.
