Call for applications: EEES Scholars Program - Dartmouth College

Thinking about graduate school in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Earth Systems Science, or Environmental Social Sciences? Want to help create a more diverse, equitable, and just academic environment? Not sure where to start? The EEES Scholars Program may be for you!

The EEES Scholars Program at Dartmouth College is a workshop designed to diversify the next generation of academic leaders in the fields of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Earth Systems Science and Environmental Social Sciences. We seek motivated students who are curious about graduate careers in the Environment and are looking for support in the graduate school application process.

The graduate application process can be opaque and difficult to navigate, presenting many barriers to prospective students. As part of efforts to increase the diversity and accessibility of graduate studies in ecology, evolutionary biology, environmental studies and earth systems, Dartmouth EEES (Ecology, Evolution, Environment & Society) encourages students to apply to the EEES Scholars Program. In this program, talented students (EEES Scholars) will be invited to 3 days of virtual activities designed to provide the tools to expertly apply to graduate schools and gain a deeper understanding of the Dartmouth EEES program. The EEES Scholars Program will focus on the graduate application process, connecting with EEES faculty and students, and helping to showcase Scholars’ academic achievements. Scholars will attend CV and personal statement workshops, mock graduate school interviews, and participate in virtual research talks and poster sessions. Students with backgrounds historically underrepresented in STEM and environmental fields are particularly encouraged to apply.

*Note admission into the EEES Scholars Program is separate from admission into EEES Graduate Program, but we encourage our scholars to submit formal applications to our graduate school after the conclusion of the Scholars Program. Scholars all receive fee waivers for EEES graduate school applications and an extended deadline to submit.

Who are we looking for?
The EEES program is committed to increasing the presence and visibility of promising students who will bring a diversity of viewpoints and cultures to STEM fields (particularly ecology, evolutionary biology, and earth systems science) and the environmental social sciences. EEES hinges on graduate students who have an interest in and passion for interdisciplinary research in Ecology, Evolution, Environment, Society. Fostering a diverse, inclusive, and supportive community of scholars is critical to our mission. This EEES Scholars Program is part of a larger effort to build and support such an academic community.

Current undergraduates, recent college graduates, current Masters students, recent Masters graduates and those that are currently or have recently worked in the public or private sector interested in pursuing graduate work in Ecology, Evolution, Environment & Society are all welcome to apply! You do not need to be a U.S. citizen. Please forward this opportunity widely!

The EEES Scholars Program will be held virtually September 2-4, 2021. EEES Scholars applications are due July 23, 2021. Please see our website for more information on how to apply!

IBS Young Scientist Fellowship for Climate Physics - Institute for Basic Science, South Korea

With the vision of “Making discoveries for humanity and society,” the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) was founded in 2011 by the Korean government to promote basic science in Korea. To date, IBS has 31 Research Centers and each Center has been yielding outstanding results in various research fields.
The IBS Young Scientist Fellowship started in 2016 to play an active role in fostering the next generation of basic science leaders. This Fellowship offers junior scientists opportunities to conduct independent research by utilizing state-of-the-art infrastructure and to grow on the basis of research collaborations with leading researchers.

The Busan Research Center is currently seeking an IBS Young Scientist Fellowship for Climate Physics.

Eligibility

  • Within seven years of obtaining a Ph.D. (obtained no earlier than 1 January 2014) or under the age of 40 with a Ph.D. (born no earlier than 1 January 1981)
    • Ph.D. candidates must be conferred with a Ph.D. degree no later than 31 August 2021.
  • Current IBS researchers are eligible to apply, if they meet the above criteria.

Research is carried out in the framework of the groups of Climate and Environmental Physics and the Oeschger Center for Climate Change Research. You will be embedded in a highly international and vigorous academic working environment which offers unique professional opportunities.

The work will focus on the Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT) about 1 million years ago when the ice age cyclicity slowed down by about a factor of 2.5. You will explore the stability of warm, intermediate, and cold climate states and use and further develop the Bern3D model, an Earth System Model of Intermediate Complexity.

Please see here for more details. Applications are accepted until this position is filled. Your application can be submitted here.
