International Year of the Salm (IYS) Coordinator - North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPFAC)

The North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC) has a contract position available for the International Year of the Salmon (IYS) Coordinator. They will be responsible for coordinating IYS activities and research that are part of the International Year of the Salmon initiative (see full description of duties below). The IYS Coordinator is to be working at the NPAFC Secretariat office located in downtown Vancouver, BC during the contracted term. However, due to the current situation with COVID-19, the IYS Coordinator is asked to perform all duties from home until further notice and as personal safety allows. This is a 4-month, full-time position of 37.5 hrs/week starting March 1st, with possibility of extension. Applications are due by February 21st, 2021.

The successful candidate will perform the following duties:

  • Provide coordination and occasional facilitation support for international working groups and committees, including preparing agendas, discussion documents and reports;
  • Provide coordination support for the Symposium Steering Committee and support the planning of the IYS Concluding Symposium.
  • Participate in the development of the IYS Outreach and Communications plans for the North Pacific region;
  • Assist with administration of the IYS activities, incl. development of contracts, venue bookings, logistics, etc.;
  • Assist in development of IYS fundraising proposals;
  • Manage the IYS website and coordinate any future development;
  • Develop and maintain IYS meeting records and write reports and summaries as needed;
  • Coordinate IYS activities and Signature Projects including the Likely Suspects Project, Salmonscape Workshops, Data Mobilization and potential workshops on barriers to data mobilization;
  • Assist the High Seas Coordinator with 2022 High Seas Expedition related tasks;
  • Assist with the development and administration of the Third NPAFC-IYS workshop in in May 2021;
  • Represent IYS activities at relevant workshops and conferences;
  • Monitor the IYS Budget and track finances in relation to the IYS project workplan and activities;
  • Supervise the NPAFC Intern(s) who will be assigned work on IYS-related projects.

We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in a biological or environmental science (or other related discipline).
  • At least one year of experience working in scientific research, natural resource management or on environmental issues.
  • Experience analyzing and synthesizing information to formulate and write reports, correspondence or communications materials (such as briefing notes, memorandums, technical reports, letters, presentations).
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate medium to large meetings.
  • Ability to manage budgets.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regionally and internationally
  • Effective interpersonal relationships, judgement, teamwork, initiative, and time management skills

Rock Talk 2021: Advancing Discoveries in a World Class Mineral District

This year Smithers Exploration Group presents the 32nd Annual and 1st Virtual Rock Talk, February 18-19, 2021: Advancing discoveries in a World Class Mineral District.

Presentations will be given by:

  • Dr. John DeDecker (Eskay Mining Corp.) will unravel the prospectivity for stratiform VMS deposits adjacent to the past producing Eskay Creek mine as part of a post doctoral fellowship at the Colorado School of Mines
  • Dr. Shane Ebert (Surge Copper Corp.) will discuss the 2020 field season at the Ootsa project, and the recent acquisition of Berg project from Centerra Gold Inc.
  • The Eskay Creek project was one of the largest advanced-stage exploration programs on the continent last year and will be discussed by Rafael Vaudrin (Skeena Resources Limited)
  • A technical evaluation on the E&L, Nickel Mountain gabbro complex will be presented on by Russel Ashton (Western University, Garibaldi Resources Corp.)
  • The 2020 exploration program at Premier Gold will be discussed by Lawrence Tsang (Ascot Resources Ltd.), where project construction is scheduled for 2021
  • Doug Engdhal (Axiom Exploration Group) will discuss the utilization of satellite data, the co-collection of geophysical and geomatic data, and advanced machine learning targeting software for multi-variable simulation modeling used for mineral exploration in extreme terrains, such as the Golden Triangle
