Assistant Professor in Paleoenvironmental Sedimentology - Carleton University

The Department of Earth Sciences at Carleton University invites applications from qualified candidates for a preliminary (tenure-track) appointment in Paleoenvironmental Sedimentology at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 1st, 2021.

The Department is interested in candidates with demonstrated excellence conducting interdisciplinary, field- and lab-based research in sedimentary systems. The candidate is expected to make use of modern geochemical tools in addition to field-based analysis to study inorganic and fossil (micro or macro) material for the purposes of environmental analysis, documenting past and-or present environmental conditions, and integrating sedimentary facies and (paleo)ecological parameters. The candidate must be able to teach core courses in sedimentary geology, have demonstrated field and laboratory experience, and, in addition to providing a thriving graduate-research program, supervise 4th-yr theses in the Earth Sciences B. Sc. Honours program.

Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences (or related field), and possess a strong commitment to research and scholarship as reflected in peer-reviewed publications, and have demonstrated excellence in teaching. The successful candidate will have the ability to develop an externally-funded, high-quality research program; will be committed to effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels; and will contribute effectively to the academic life of the Department. Proficiency in English is a requirement.

2020 Science Communications Internship - Schmidt Ocean Institute

The Science Communications Internship aims to provide educational and practical support to graduate students studying marine science, communications, journalism, or a related field. Interns will work with our Communications team supporting outreach programs, with the goal of engaging, influencing, and generating public support for a healthy ocean through advanced scientific research, technology innovation, and open sharing of information. The intern will assist with a variety of strategic communications tasks and initiatives, contributing content to Schmidt Ocean Institute’s digital channels and interactive programs. Post-Doctoral Position in Geosciences - University of Massachussets in Amherst

The Department of Geosciences seeks applications for a Post-doctoral Research Fellow (one year but renewable to two) with computer skills in dynamic topography modeling and Glacial Isostatic Adjustments to explore how regional and far field geophysics can be used to reconcile both land-based paleoshorelines and marine based paleoceanographic records to better understanding the history of the Beringian gateway and its climatic impacts. The time frame of interest concerns change over glacial/interglacial timescales since the first submergence of the Strait roughly 5 million years ago.

Work in the first year could lead to an NSF proposal for new field-work and additional geochronology on land based records. Ideal candidates will have a PhD at time of hire in a quantitative subject and have some experience with GIA and DT modeling.
