Revealing the pathways to scale up agricultural transformation: Factors influencing adoption of Silvo pastoral systems in Colombia

Colombia is a global biodiversity hotspot of important ecological significance. However, deforestation is rampant in the country, and its primary cause is extensive cattle ranching which is inefficient, susceptible to climatic events, contributes to poverty, and causes unsustainable levels of environmental degradation such as water pollution. An agroecological alternative to ECR is Silvopastoral systems (SPS) which combine trees and shrubs in forage grasses to enhance cattle production. Thus, the goal of my research is to determine how SPS practices can be scaled out.

Developing a field-scale crop yield prediction model using satellite and environmental data

Timely and reliable estimation of crop production is essential for strategic decision making in the agricultural system. Recently, detailed ground-based field-scale yield datasets have become available providing a timely opportunity for using high spatial resolution observational data for model training. The key research objective was to develop a crop-yield prediction model using satellite and biophysical data and calibrated using field-scale yield monitor data.

Time: 12:30pm to 1:20pm

Location: Beaty Museum Allan Yap Theatre (Basement, 2212 Main Mall).

IOF SEMINAR - Anti-Inequity and the Blue Economy, March 1, 2024

The "Blue Economy" is the most widely used term throughout ocean policy and development, but what does it actually mean? (Spoiler: whatever you need it to.) In this talk, I'll go through some of the history and current narratives about the Blue Economy, especially as it relates to other types of ocean development and management. I'll argue that social equity has to be at the core of the Blue Economy in order for it to be a meaningful approach to follow, and that social equity itself has to be at least somewhat re-thought in terms of anti-inequity. The oceans are obviously essential for maintaining cultures, livelihoods (and, yes, macroeconomics), but making sure that ecosystems are sustainable will not be enough to protecting those relationships.

IOF - Africa-UBC Oceans and Fisheries Visiting Fellow Program

For the past several months the IOF has been working to develop a "Africa-UBC Oceans and Fisheries Visiting Fellow Program", which would enable talented early-career researchers from sub-Saharan African universities and research institutes to engage with UBC researchers.

We are now ready to launch! Join us on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at 9:00 am PST (5:00 pm GMT for our partners in Ghana) as Dr. William Cheung, professor and IOF Director, Dr. Daniel Pauly, Dr. Rashid Sumaila, and Dr. Denis Aheto, Director of the Center for Coastal Management, University of Cape Coast, Ghana, announce the beginning of this program, and the opening for applications from African researchers.
