Wares Postdoc Fellowship Competition - McGill University

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, invites applications for the Wares Postdoctoral Fellowships. The fellowships provide opportunities for outstanding early career Earth Scientists to work on research projects within the broad range of disciplines covered by researchers in the Department. Fellows will pursue an independent research project in collaboration with one or more faculty members. One Wares Fellow will be appointed.

The Postdoctoral fellowships are for two years and offer a competitive salary of $50,000 per year (plus benefits), a total research stipend of $10,000, and a maximum relocation allowance of $2,500. Additionally, the postdoctoral fellows will have access to a wide range of networking, mentoring and development opportunities available for early career professionals at McGill University.

Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Economic Geology) in the School of Geosciences - University of the Witwatersrand

The School of Geosciences at the University of the Witwatersrand invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time permanent academic position at Lecturer/Senior Lecturer level. The School enjoys a high international research profile, with strong multidisciplinary research programmes in Geology and Geophysics and has close links to the Evolutionary Studies Institute. The School has a strong focus on the Precambrian geology of South Africa and other parts of Africa, with particular strengths being in geophysics, geochemistry, petrology and economic geology. The School co-hosts the national DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Integrated Mineral and Energy Resource Analysis (CIMERA), the international Africa Array Geophysics Programme and the Economic Geology Research Institute (EGRI). The state-of-the-art geoanalytical facilities include Cameca SX5 Field Emission EPMA, TESCAN-TIMA, LASF- ICP-MS, TIMS MC-ICPMS instruments, geohydrology facilities, as well as an ultraclean isotope laboratory (WIGL). These facilities are part of the newly developed Earth Observatory that represents the most well-equipped geoanalytical facility on the continent.

The School delivers a curriculum with a strong focus in economic geology, including courses in ore genesis and ore petrology, as well as an internationally recognised MSc course. Additionally, a new laboratory in Geometallurgy, as well as an associated MSc course in Geometallurgy, is currently being developed. The School seeks to appoint a candidate who will contribute to economic geology, ore genesis and ore petrology teaching and research. The candidate will be expected to complement the existing research strengths of the Economic Geology Research Institute (EGRI), benefitting from the world-class geochemical facilities within the School, and will lead cutting-edge research concerning the origin of Africa’s ore deposits and exploration for discovery of new metal deposits for the future. Preference will be given to candidates with a proven expertise in economic geology and knowledge of a wide range of mineral deposits in multiple geological settings. The level of appointment and starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Duties:

A successful candidate is expected to establish a research programme and publish research results in internationally accredited journals, as well as raise research funds through competitive grants and attract postgraduate students. She/he will be required to teach specialist courses in Economic Geology and ore petrology at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate levels. She/he will also need to organise and lead field trips for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Requirements:

Applicants must provide evidence of:

• A PhD in geological sciences.
• A broad knowledge of a variety of deposit types (interest in critical metals and their role in the green economy would be beneficial).
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Structural geology skills in fieldwork and microstructural observations would also be an advantage.
• An independent research record with publications in internationally recognised journals.
• Suitable record of fundraising for research projects and postgraduate student support.
