Flying Weather - Module E (case ID = f14)

Group Activities (not available until you have finished your readings & quizzes from Step 4)

These next activities can be done by groups of up to 10 students. We encourage interaction with your classmates in your group as you apply your new weather knowledge to the event case study here.  However, you are allowed to work individually if you prefer.

Step 5a. Data Available at Start of Trip

Click on each link below to get details of the specific weather situation for this particular flight.  Use this specific info, along with the general weather fundamentals you learned in Step 4, to help you make a flight decision in Step 6.
Your Own Observations
Atmospheric Soundings
Weather Maps
METARs & TAFs
Satellite & Radar Images
Other Info

Don't know how to interpret these data?  Review the meteorological concepts back in Step 4.

Step 5b.  Discuss your interpretation of these data with your group-mates.

Tip: In real life, sometimes there is not a "perfect" decision, because of uncertainties in the weather.  Your job is to find the most reasonable decision, given the uncertainty.  Work with your group-mates to converge to a reasonable recommendation.  Good luck.

A) Continue to Toronto airport to land as soon as possible.

B) Ask for a holding pattern (i.e, fly in a circle at a location away from the airport) to wait until the thunderstorms move away, and then return to Toronto to land.

C) Ask the more experienced captain to take over the flight to land at Toronto.

D) Fly to Ottawa airport and land there.

E) Turn around and fly back to your original departure point in Europe.

F) Put on your parachute and jump out of the aircraft before you run out of fuel.

Note:  Your grade will depend on whether your individual recommendation is correct AND on how many of your team members agree with you.  Feel free to  go back to Step 5a to discuss more in the Slack chat-room before you make your final decision.  No changes are allowed after you check your "decision is final" box below.

Yes, my decision is final:

The deadline to finish Step 6 is given on the course home web page, after which Steps 7 - 10 of this Module will be revealed.

After you have examined the data available at the start of the trip in step 5, and made your decision in step 6, click HERE to see page 3, which includes steps 7 - 10.  (A video for page 3 is not needed, because that page already presents expert recommendations.)
