UBC ATSC 413 - Forest-fire Weather & Climate

Getting Started

Under construction (this web page, and most other web pages for this course).

Software

You need a computer or laptop with a web browser such as Chrome. Please bring your laptops to class every day.

From the web browser, you will frequently access the following, so please bookmark them:

Most of the content is accessible via the links at the top of each of our web pages: Home, Schedule, Fire Basics, etc.

Schedule of Topics and Assignments

Across the top of most of the web pages are navigation tabs that take you to info that we use in this course. Please take a few seconds to see those tabs at the top of this web page (i.e., in the region with the light blue background). Those tabs can serve as a reference on the various topics that are covered in this course.

However, in this course we access those topics in a certain order, focused on the weather associated with actual wildfire cases. The "Schedule" tab tells you what topics are covered every week, gives you the (testable) learning goals for each topic, and often provides links to other web pages that provide the content for that topic.

Although this is an "in person" course, the "slides" that the instructors present during lecture and the weather maps that you use for lab are all in the content that you access via the Schedule tab. Thus, the Schedule tab is critically important to your success in this course.

[Note: Fall 2023 is the first time we are offering this course, so we don't know the exact timing of each subject. Thus, the dates in the schedule are somewhat vague. Instead, please pay close attention to any Announcements made via the Canvas website for this course.]

Where to Start:

Much of the course content is password protected. You will learn the password during the first day of class. The password is also given on the Canvas site for this course, which you can access after the term starts (or after you join the course, if you join it late).

If you joined the course late

Don't worry. We recorded the first several lectures as "lecture snippet" movies that you can watch on your own to catch up. Follow the "Where to Start" instructions above.
