FIRMS

Explore NASA's website on Fire Information for Resource Management System. See nfb 2.1 (where nfb = new ID on the Fire Basics webpage).

Use NASA's Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) to get near-real time (and historic) fire hotspot info from satellites. Explain its utility and its limitations for "fire detection on the ground". Explain how active fires are detected using thermal anomalies observed by satellite.
GWIS Explore the website for the Global Wildfire Information System. See nfb 2.2. Use the Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS) to describe what fire-related products are available. Explain how to use GWIS maps and charts.
CIFFC Explore the website of the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre. See nfb 2.3. Describe what wildfire information is available from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC), and particularly from its Dashboard.
Weather Briefing Health & movement break.  Then ...
Short (10 minute) weather briefing on Vancouver weather by a student team. Utilize the weather-briefing "cookbook" to select which images and movies to show.
Give a well structured weather briefing using appropriate maps and graphs, and finishing within the alotted time. Gain experience in public speaking and working as a team. Strengthen your understanding of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics. Strengthen your ability to form a 3-D picture of the weather in your mind. Utilize appropriate terminology and jargon.
NIFC Explore the website for the US national Interagency Fire Center. See nfb 2.4. Describe what fire info is available from the US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC).
