Research Interests and Background
I received my PhD in 1963 from the University Wisconsin-Madison with a major in metamorphic petrology and a minor in physics. This was followed with postdoctoral work in rock physics at Harvard University under the direction of Francis Birch. In 1995 I was named an American Geophysical Union fellow in seismology.
Reaseach topics of particular interest include the following:
- Structure and composition of the Earth’s crust
- Crustal and upper mantle seismic anisotropy
- Formation and evolution of the Earth’s crust and upper mantle
- High pressure-temperature physics and engineering
- Rock and mineral physics: integration with seismic observations
- Ophiolites as models for the oceanic lithosphere
- Deep sea and continental drilling- downhole logging
- Crustal seismic attenuation
- Pore pressure in the Earth’s crust
- Subduction zone structure, mineralogy, porosity and permeability
