The Department of Earth Sciences at St. Francis Xavier University invites applications for a Tenure Track appointment in the area of Sedimentary geology at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2022. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
St. Francis Xavier University, located in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, acknowledges that it is situated in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. StFX is a top ranked, primarily undergraduate university that continually seeks to evolve its curriculum, programs, and degrees to reflect new knowledge. StFX strives to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion by increasing the diversity of its staff, faculty, and students, increasing educational access to historically marginalized groups, and evolving its degrees and programs.
The department has six professors, offers undergraduate programs in solid earth geoscience and environmental science, and typically houses 10-20 graduate (MSc and PhD) students. The ideal candidate will employ a combination of field and laboratory techniques to investigate ancient and/or modern sedimentary systems and will complement departmental research strengths in structural geology and tectonics, climate dynamics, gas emissions, and biogeochemistry.
Applicants should have a broad background in the solid earth geosciences, a dedication to teaching field geology, the ability to teach introductory earth science courses, and expertise in a field broadly related to sedimentary processes. Given the small size of the department, applicants should have the ability to teach courses outside of their main area of expertise.
The successful candidate will contribute to a research-intensive interdisciplinary department and build upon research strengths and capacity that align with the strategic plans of the University. Applicants are expected to provide evidence of innovative and internationally visible research activities on sedimentary systems and processes, and if successful, to develop a strong externally funded research program and supervise graduate and honours students. The department offers a research-based MSc program; departmental faculty can supervise PhD students in-house through an agreement with Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador.
St. Francis Xavier University is committed to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. To address under representation of historically excluded groups in academic positions in Geosciences, the Academic Vice-President and Provost reserves this position for scholars who self-identify as female, racialized, indigenous, people with disabilities and/or 2SLGBTQIA+ applicants. All applicants must self-identify in their cover letter. Information applicants provide about their identity will only be shared with the Search Committee. The successful applicant maybe required to provide additional self-identification information prior to hiring.
Applicants should provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statements of research and teaching interests and philosophy, and the contact information for three references. Reference letters will be requested only for those applicants who are selected to be interviewed. Applications should be sent via email to: Dr. Lisa Kellman at lsampson@stfx.ca. The review of applications will begin on March 16, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled.
