EOAS Major Awards and Scholarships
The awards listed below are the main sources of non-stipend funding for EOAS students. You can click on the title of the awards for more information. The Graduate Program Coordinator will send relevant funding sources via email. Please check the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for a list of awards and scholarships including merit and need-based funding.
Deadlines
The following deadlines are for reference only and deadlines may change.
- September to October: NSERC CGRS-D, Affiliated Scholarships for PhD students
- September to October: Killam Doctoral Scholarships
- December to January: NSERC CGRS-M, Affiliated Scholarships for MSc students
- December to January: Indigenous Graduate Fellowships

Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Master’s (CGRS M)
Eligibility: MSc/MASc students, to be eligible to apply, along with other criteria, applicants must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or a Protected Person, and either enrolled in an eligible master’s or direct-entry doctoral program with a significant research component or have applied for, or are intending to apply for, an eligible program. The award may only be held at eligible Canadian post-secondary institutions.
Value: $27,000 for a Master’s student (for 12 months, non renewable) (NSERC – Canada Graduate Research Scholarships – Master’s program)
General Deadline: December for MSc/MASc students (departmental competition)
Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Doctoral (CGRS D)
Eligibility: PhD students, to be eligible to apply, along with other criteria, applicants may be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, Protected Person, or foreign citizen, and either enrolled in an eligible doctoral program with a significant research component or have applied for, or are intending to apply for, an eligible program. Foreign citizens must be enrolled in a doctoral program of study at an eligible Canadian institution at the time of application. Up to 15% of all doctoral awards will be awarded to international applicants. The award may be held at both Canadian and international post-secondary institutions. Approximately 20% of all doctoral awards would be eligible to be held abroad. International applicants may only hold the award in Canada.
Value: $40,000 (for up to 36 months) (Canada Graduate Research Scholarships - Doctoral program)
General Deadline: September for PhD (departmental competition)
Killam Doctoral Fellowships
Eligibility: PhD students regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply
Value: $40,000 annual stipend for a maximum of two years (Killam Doctoral Scholarships awardees on the UBC-Vancouver campus also become Four Year Fellowship holders and receive additional tuition funding from the 4YF program if they are eligible).
General Deadline: September/October
Killam Doctoral Scholarships are the most prestigious awards available to graduate students at UBC. Approximately 25 awards are offered each year to the top doctoral candidates.
Indigenous Graduate Fellowship
Eligibility: All Indigenous graduate students are eligible to apply. All Indigenous students are eligible to apply, but priority is given to Indigenous students whose traditional territory falls, at least in part, within Canada. This includes Canadian First Nations, Métis or Inuit students and may include Indigenous students from Alaska and other states of the USA. The university may request further information to confirm Indigenous eligibility. Indigenous students registered in professional and coursework-only master’s programs are also eligible to apply.
Value: $17,500 stipend plus tuition per year for Master's students (up to 2 years); $25,000 stipend plus tuition per year for doctoral students (up to 4 years)

Affiliated Fellowships Doctoral Program
Eligibility: PhD students regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply
Value: Most awards in the range of $16,000 a year
General Deadline: September for PhD, December for MSc (departmental competition)
These are a collection of awards held by UBC which are supported by private donors. Anyone who applies for a NSERC award is automatically considered for an Affiliated award. Canadian or permanent resident students who apply for an NSERC CGS-D scholarship are automatically considered for an Affiliated award.
Four Year Doctoral Fellowships (4YF)
Eligibility: PhD students regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply
General Deadline: February/March
The department offers a number of Four Year Fellowships (FYF) to outstanding doctoral students worth $18,200.00 per year with free tuition coverage. Preference is given to first year current students, but incoming applicants are also eligible. Nominations are submitted by prospective or current supervisors.
Affiliated Fellowships Master’s Program
Eligibility: All thesis-based graduate students regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply
Value: Up to $16,000 a year
General Deadline: December for MSc/MASc (departmental competition)
These are a collection of awards held by UBC which are supported by private donors. Canadian or permanent resident students who apply for an NSERC CGS-D scholarship are automatically considered for an Affiliated award.
Department Awards
Eligibility: All thesis-based graduate students regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply
General Deadline: February/March
Each year the department gives out approximately $100,000 in graduate scholarships from our endowed funds. These include both departmental scholarships and prizes. Calls for these awards are distributed via e-mail. To participate in the awards competition, students must complete an application form and provide additional information including recent transcripts, following specifications in the call.
