Description/Abstract
Thirty years ago, data science was dominated by statistics. Today, it is composed of machine learning and statistics, with machine learning the much faster growing component. How and why this sea change occurred will be discussed, and some new ways to tackle problems in environmental sciences using machine learning will be presented.
