The Department of Geography in the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University invites applications for a tenure track position at the assistant professor level, commencing autumn semester 2022. We seek a scholar with research interests in synoptic meteorology and weather forecasting. Our undergraduate Atmospheric Science Program has >70 majors and has grown significantly in recent years. This position will support our Atmospheric Sciences Program at the undergraduate (BS) and graduate (MS, PhD) levels. The successful candidate will teach synoptic meteorology and forecasting courses at the undergraduate level and graduate classes in atmospheric science that are commensurate with their research interests. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research focuses on mid-latitude weather systems, numerical weather prediction, radar meteorology, or severe weather. The successful candidate will be expected to attract external funding and have a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching.
Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science or a closely related field is required. All applicants are expected to have fundable research programs and to contribute to both graduate and undergraduate supervision and instruction. Preferred qualifications include experience developing or working in interdisciplinary research teams, ties to operational weather forecasting activities, university teaching experience and experience mentoring members of underrepresented groups. Appointment is contingent on the university’s verification of credentials and other information required by law and/or university policies, including but not limited to a criminal background check.

Course Description: Provides Environmental Science students the opportunity to investigate an environmental science topic in depth, through lecture and bi-weekly guest speakers from diverse sectors (academia, government, industry and NGOs).
Minimum Qualifications: Natural science-based Bachelor’s degree and research-based Master’s degree, or natural science-based PhD in progress, all in Environmental Science or a related disciple (e.g. Biology, Earth Sciences, Geology, Physical Geography, Oceanography).
Recommended Qualifications: Natural science-based PhD in Environmental Science with a minimum of 4 months teaching experience at the post-secondary level.
EVSC 400-4 Environmental Science Capstone

Course Description: In the final year of undergraduate study, students from all Environmental Science concentrations will integrate their disciplinary, science backgrounds to solve environmental problems. Project-based coursework will promote collaborative group work, emphasizing research skills, data analysis, scientific writing and communication, preparing students for employment as Environmental Scientists.

Assistant Professor - Communicating Climate Change
We seek candidates conducting interdisciplinary research on how climate change is understood and communicated among diverse knowledge producers and audiences. Ideally, candidates will have a grounding in both climate science and climate policy, as well as in communication and community engagement. Candidates’ research may include topics such as (but not limited to): how society creates, understands, and acts upon the scientific evidence of climate change; how that evidence is mediated and interpreted through politics, language, art, culture, and religion; and the range of communication strategies employed by diverse actors in climate policy processes.
Assistant Professor – The Sustainability Transition
We seek candidates conducting interdisciplinary research on the social, economic, political, and technological transitions necessary for sustainability. Specifically, we seek candidates versed in science and technology studies, whose research investigates sociotechnical transitions, pathways to decarbonization, and societal changes required to promote sustainability. Candidates’ research must be related to investigating effective solutions for achieving just and sustainable societies, and the technological, socio-economic, institutional, political, and/or cultural change required to do so. We prefer candidates who have demonstrated the ability to build inter- and trans-disciplinary collaborations that navigate the manifold interconnections between science and society.
