Speaking With One Voice - geoscience messaging in a fragmented community

This session is intended to explore the experiences of top-tier national geoscience organizations in representing the views of their national geoscience community in both national and international professional and public forums - how are they organized, how do they communicate, what are the advantages and challenges of a strong central organziation versus a large number of small specialist groups.  We are looking for case histories, both successful and unsuccessful, as well as assessments of strengths and weaknesses of various approaches.

Invited presentations will detail the organization and communications strategies of various national geoscience bodies.  Presentations are also invited from those who have interacted with, used or otherwise benefited from the interaction with national geoscience bodies.

In commemoration of the breadth of research led by Kurt Kyser, which focused on the application of isotope geochemistry and mineralogy to Earth systems, we would like to invite colleagues, and particularly former students and post-doctoral fellows, to submit an abstract on any aspect of research that was ignited by work under Kurt's mentorship.

Canada Excellence Research Chair in Arctic Sea Ice, Freshwater-Marine Coupling and Climate Change, University of Manitoba

The University of Manitoba invites applications and nominations for a Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Arctic Sea-ice, Freshwater-Marine coupling and Climate Change.   The successful applicant will also be appointed to a full-time tenured position at the rank of Professor, to commence September 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Research Chair will join the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources, and be housed within our Centre for Earth Observation Science (CEOS).  Established in 2003, this innovative faculty is the institution’s hub for environmental research and teaching focusing on identifying and managing Earth resources, understanding Earth processes, and the implications for human populations.

The academic qualifications of the Chair will include:

• internationally recognized expertise in the field of Arctic sea ice, freshwater-marine coupling and climate change as evidenced by a strong publication in high impact journals and the acquisition of national or international peer-reviewed grants and contracts;
• experience working with freshwater fluxes to the marine system originating from glaciers, rivers, and or sea ice melt.
• demonstrated excellence in graduate student supervision;
• demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary research team
• demonstrated ability to work within the framework of Arctic System Science
• demonstrated ability to communicate science to a range of stakeholders (e.g., policy makers, northern peoples, public, other scientists).

Two Canada Research Chairs (Tier 2) in Oil Spill Science and Sea Ice Modelling Position, University of Manitoba

The University of Manitoba invites applications for two (2) Canada Research Chairs (CRC) –Tier 2: one in oil spill science and one in sea ice modelling. Both will be tenure-track appointments at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Outstanding applicants with internationally recognized expertise in the broad fields of oil spill science (e.g., fate, effects, mitigation, or detection of oil or other transportation-related contaminant spills) and sea ice modelling (e.g., coupled ocean-sea ice-atmosphere modelling for both dynamic and thermodynamic modelling of sea ice) are encouraged to apply.

The selected candidates will be nominated by the University of Manitoba to apply for the Government of Canada’s prestigious CRC - Tier 2 program. Appointment with the University of Manitoba is conditional upon the successful award of a CRC-Tier 2 to the candidates. The successful candidates will be expected to play a major role in the Genome Canada project GENICE (https://www.genomecanada.ca/en/genice-microbial-genomics-oil-spill- preparedness-canadas-arctic-marine-environment), Churchill Marine Observatory (CMO; http://umanitoba.ca/ceos/research/CMO.html), and other collaborative Arctic marine programs at the University of Manitoba.

The position start date will be November 1, 2018, or as soon thereafter as possible. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
