The Department of Geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of Physical Oceanography. We encourage applications from candidates with a broad range of interests and expertise, from regional to global-scale physical oceanography, and using a variety of approaches from numerical modeling to in situ or remote observation. We are especially interested in candidates who complement existing research in coastal processes, ocean modeling, climate processes, and remote and autonomous observing platforms. The ideal candidate will have a strong record of research productivity commensurate with their experience, interest and experience in interdisciplinary work, and a strong vision for research and teaching in physical oceanography and related fields.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop an actively funded research program of the highest quality, contribute to teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, recruit and mentor graduate students, and participate in university service and professional activities. The ideal candidate will be able to interface with a diverse and interdisciplinary group of colleagues within the Department of Geography, with expertise in marine science and ecology, climate and atmospheric sciences, Earth surface processes, remote sensing, GIScience, transportation geography, urban and economic geography, cognitive science, and human-environment interactions. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute to teaching and mentoring in the Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Marine Science (IGPMS), and participate in ongoing research programs across campus, including the Santa Barbara Coastal and Moorea Coral Reef Long-Term Ecological Research projects. Candidates that can leverage synergies across the wide range of marine and Earth science-related research units at UCSB are especially welcome.
The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service as appropriate to the position. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are among the university’s core values, and we welcome ambitious and creative colleagues who will contribute to that aspect of the university’s mission.
