In Loving Memory of Roy Hyndman 

I am extremely saddened to let you know that Dr. Roy Hyndman passed away on May 16, 2023, at Saanich Peninsula Hospital on Vancouver Island.

Roy Hyndman was one of the most respected Earth scientists, a visionary scientific leader, and a great teacher. His contributions to the science of tectonics and geodynamics cross the boundaries of land and ocean, geology and geophysics, and fundamental research and societal needs. He was well known for his ability to establish new conceptual frameworks from multidisciplinary observations. He played a leadership role in many Canadian and international multidisciplinary research programs and supervised many graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and was the recipient of the J. Tuzo Wilson medal of the Canadian Geophysical Union and the Logan medal of the Geological Association of Canada.

Roy’s passion for science was legendary. After retirement in 2012, he continued to produce new ideas and publish new findings at an admirable rate. While fighting cancer, he finished his last manuscript two weeks before passing away.

Roy Hyndman’s depth is a loss to the entire geophysics community in Canada and worldwide. He will be dearly missed.
