Positions in Data Assimilation - Environment and Climate Change Canada

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is seeking skilled candidates to conduct cutting-edge research in atmospheric and environmental data assimilation. This work supports operational numerical weather and environmental prediction (NWEP) particularly by improving the assimilation of satellite-based and in-situ observations for the different components of the Earth system (e.g. atmosphere, air-quality, urban, hydrology, land surface, snow, sea-ice, ocean).

Incumbents would be working in the multi-disciplinary team of data assimilation and modelling scientists within the Meteorological Research Division of ECCC, based at the Canadian Meteorological Center in Montreal, that is responsible for the advancement of data assimilation applications within the Canadian operational NWEP systems. Amongst other things, this team is well known for its pioneering work on ensemble-based (e.g. EnKF, LETKF) and four-dimensional ensemble-variational (4DEnVar) data assimilation, as well as its work on the Canadian land data assimilation system (CalDAS).

ECCC is particularly interested in individuals who have experience with one or more of the following: ensemble and variational data assimilation methodologies (including coupled assimilation); remote sensing with an emphasis on radiative transfer processes and algorithms (e.g. RTTOV, CMEM, SMRT), machine-learning and artificial intelligence, observation quality control and bias correction approaches. Programming experience using Fortran, SQLite, object-oriented programming (e.g. Python) and a working experience with NWEP would be an added advantage.

Please contact Dr. Joel Bedard (joel.bedard@ec.gc.ca) for any enquiries.
