Postdoctoral Position in Polar Marine Ecosystems & Biogeochemistry, University of Virginia

The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks a Research Associate(s) to contribute to computational research on marine biogeochemistry along the western Antarctic Peninsula associated with the NSF Palmer Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project. The research associates will work directly with Scott Doney in the Department of Environmental Sciences.

The candidates must have experience with data analysis and visualization. Candidates need strong knowledge of marine biogeochemistry and Antarctic marine ecosystems; prior experience with the Palmer LTER data set is preferred. Strong skills in verbal and written communication of scientific results, ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of interdisciplinary teams, and ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate multiple tasks are required skills.

Appointment is for one year with possibility of a renewal for one additional year, contingent upon satisfactory performance and funding. The completion of a Ph.D. in oceanography or related field is required by appointment start date.

Program Coordinator, Vancouver Summer Program, UBC

IRES will be offering two packages (1.The Grand Challenge of Climate Change; 2. Energy Innovation and Climate Solutions) for their June Vancouver Summer Program.  We are looking for an enthusiastic, culturally fluent program coordinator who will oversee the delivery of the summer program working closely with VSP Central, Accommodation and Conferences, UBC Rec, IRES faculty, UBC and international students.  The program will offer a four week summer exchange program to a group of approx. 20 international students between June 3rd and July 3rd.
 
The coordinator will lead the IRES VSP by working alongside the Instructor in creating the program design, administrative tasks, event planning and budgeting to ensure the smooth operation of the Summer Program. This will be a 10 week full-time position starting approx. Monday April 30th.

Job Duties:

-Oversees the planning and execution of the Vancouver Summer Program, including timetabling, coordination of welcome event & orientation, student outings, meetings, recruitment and budgeting. 
-Fiscally responsible for annual budget for the program; coordinates all expenses in collaboration with international student assistants. 
-Leads the training and supervision of the international student assistants.
-Arranges all pick up/drop off schedules, social programming and other activity timelines to ensure appropriate coverage for events. Ensures a respectful, supportive and welcoming environment for VSP students.
-Works collaboratively with VSP central office, instructors, and international student assistants to ensure successful execution of all events.
- Attendance at events required (includes evenings and weekends). -Carrying out other related duties as necessary.

Teaching and Learning Fellow: Geographical Information Systems - EOAS, UBC

The department of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (UBC – Vancouver Campus) seeks a Teaching and Learning Fellow (TLF) in the area of Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The TLF will work alongside Scott McDougall (Assistant Professor) and Siobhan Whadcoat (PDF) on a project to integrate GIS into existing courses within the department. The TLF will be responsible for developing a series of online lessons to introduce students to the basic concepts of GIS, key skills for using GIS platforms, and the application of GIS within an earth sciences context.

Qualifications: 

-A postgraduate degree in earth sciences, geography, or a related discipline, including GIS courses, OR a minimum of 3 years work experience that includes working with GIS;
-Experience managing projects;
-The ability to multi-task and deliver within project timelines working as part of a team;
-Enthusiasm for GIS and the need for it to be taught within earth sciences.

In addition, it is desirable for candidates to have:   
-Experience teaching GIS, preferably in an earth sciences context;
-Experience developing online course content.
 
Application
The appointment will be for nine months at 0.75 time*1, effective June 1st, 2018. The full-time salary for a TLF is $62,700 p.a.
