Sustainability Scholars Summer Internships

The UBC Sustainability Scholars Summer 2018 Program has several positions open for graduate students in a variety of areas including forestry, engineering, regional planning, architecture, science, applied science, business and more. Each position is for a total of 250 hours over the summer (part-time), for which the successful candidate will receive $5250.

IIES Water Pollution Mitigation and Aquatic Remediation - Online Lecture Series FREE

The International Institute for Environmental Studies (IIES) at Trent University is pleased to let you know about an upcoming online lecture series titled, “Water Pollution Mitigation and Aquatic Remediation”. The series runs every Wednesday morning (08h00 EST) from April 11-June 20, 2018 and is available for FREE to anyone who wishes to participate. 

Lectures will be given by faculty from various internationally acclaimed universities including, the University of Edinburgh, Sun Yet-sen University, Nanjing University, Trent University and Johns Hopkins University.

Summer Data Science Fellowship Opportunity

Program: The Data Incubator is an intensive 8 week fellowship that prepares masters students, PhDs, and postdocs in STEM and social science fields seeking industry careers as data scientists. The program is free for Fellows and supported by sponsorships from hundreds of employers across multiple industries. In response to the overwhelming interest in our earlier sessions, we will be holding another fellowship.

Who Should Apply: Anyone who has already obtained a masters or PhD degree or who is within one year of graduating with a masters or PhD is welcome to apply. Applications from international students are welcome. Everyone else is encouraged to sign-up for a future session.

Locations: In addition to the below in-person locations, we will have a remote online session:

NASA Postdoctoral Fellowships in Ocean Modeling and Analysis

NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York is seeking postdoctoral scientists in Oceanography to work on projects related to the oceans role in climate, ocean-climate interactions, heat and carbon uptake, and ocean biogeochemistry.

The fellowships are designed to help advance NASA’s climate modeling efforts by combining NASA observations with models and utilizing novel techniques in numerical analysis as well as data science.

Successful candidates will be expected to work with the NASA-GISS climate model, NASA observations and in collaboration with scientists at NASA-GISS. 

Candidates’ background may be in Physical and/or Biogeochemical Oceanography, Earth Science, Physics, Mathematics or Computer Science.

NASA Postdoctoral Program application deadlines are March 1st, July 1st and November 1st each year. Eligible candidates within five years of receiving their PhD may apply as Postdoctoral Fellows and those with more than five years after their PhD may apply as a Senior Fellows.

Postdoctoral Position to Study Diagenetic Processes, Plouzané, France

A postdoctoral position is available at IFREMER (Plouzané - France) to study diagenetic processes and interpret the sedimentary record of deep-sea fans. Such depositional centers are known to be the place of fluids formation and migration through the sediment column, leading to precipitation/dissolution processes altering the mineral phases. Working with data from cores from the Zambezi deep-sea fan on the east African continental margin, the postdoctoral fellow will use numerical modeling to assess the impact of diagenetic processes on paleoreconstruction, constrain the origin of the methane and identify controls on the position of the sulfate-methane transition zone. The fellow will also be able to conduct additional analyses if required on existing core material. The post-doctoral researcher will have skills in numerical modeling and in geochemical processes; knowledge in sedimentology and geophysics are an advantage. The modeling work will be done in collaboration with Dr. Meile at the University of Georgia, USA, with the possibility of extended visits at his lab.        
    
The position involves collaboration with both academia (IFREMER, and The French Institute of Petroleum IFPEN) and industry (TOTAL). It is for 18 months, with an anticipated start date in Fall 2018. Review of applications will begin mid-April and continue until the position is filled.
