Stay up-to-date with what's happening in EOAS
Congratulations Doug
Doug Oldenburg has been selected Distinguished Lecturer by the Society ofExploration Geophysics. Selection as a Distinguished Lecturer is viewed as amajor honor and a recognition of excellence in contributions to the scienceor application of geophysics. More information is available at www.seg.org.
The big picture: A lithospheric cross section of the North American continent
EOS Researchers [R.Clowes, P.Hammer] have constructed a lithospheric cross section that spans the continent and extends down to the base of the North American tectonic plate (up to 270 km depth). The 6000-km-long corridor across southern Canada and its margins illuminates the assembly of the North American continent at an unprecedented scale. See GSA Today(poster) and UBC-Science.

Rowan Cockett, winner of NSERC Gilles Brassard Doctoral Prize for Interdisciplinary Research
Congratulations to Rowan Cockett, a PhD candidate in EOAS, who on February 17, 2015 was awarded the $10,000 NSERC Gilles Brassard Doctoral Prize for Interdisciplinary Research. Rowan is developing numerical models to utilize geophysical data in the analysis of subsurface fluid movement. He is also the developer of a widely-used web-based program Visible Geology used to visualize three-dimensional geology.
Leslie Smith is a co-recipient of the 2015 NSERC Synergy award: Reducing the business and environmental risks of mining
Dr. David Blowes, Dr. Richard Amos, Dr. David Sego, Dr. Leslie Smith, Gord Macdonald (representing the University of Waterloo, Carleton University, University of Alberta, The University of British Columbia, andDiavik Diamond Mines Inc.) have been awarded a category 2 (large companies) NSERC Synergy award recognizing long term research collaboration between universities and industry. "The Diavik Waste Rock Research Project is an unprecedented research program that is leading to better mine waste management to protect fragile northern environments for centuries to come." Congratulations Leslie!
