EOSC 212 · Topics in the Earth and Planetary Sciences

Cutting edge problems in earth, ocean, atmospheric and planetary sciences. Topics will be introduced through discussions of the current literature. [3-0-0] Prerequisite: Second-year standing in science or engineering.

Course goals related to thinking as scientists do:

1. Reading and using science articles: Recognize the type and focus of the article, then use a framework developed in class to identify and discuss questions being addressed, data sets, interpretations and uncertainties.

2. Communicating: Present, debate and ask insightful (and precise) questions about scientific ideas in assigned and self-selected readings.

3. Enthusiasm for and knowledge of EOS: Enthusiasm for all Earth and planetary sciences should grow, as well as awareness of research and expertise within the EOS Department.

4. Awareness of science learning: Articulating both what has been learned and what is perceived as missing in your own understanding.

Goals related to specific topics we encounter

5.Concepts and topics: Describe essential underlying scientific or technical concepts for each topic, and indicate elements of controversy (in science topics) or limitations and challenges (in technical topics).

6.Models versus data: For each topic, characterize the relationship between data (measurements or observations) and models.

7.Work with scientific information: Use first-year math and analytic skills to analyze and interpret data sets similar to those encountered in readings.
