As part of the UBC Geohazards Research Team, I am committed to the long-term goal of helping reduce the losses caused by landslides in Canada and world-wide. My research is on empirical-statistical methods for predicting debris flow avulsion and runout. I am seeking the answer to the following question: given a debris flow event of a certain size, where is it most likely to impact? I plan on developing practical tools and techniques for managing debris flow risk in a probabilistic framework. My methods will involve field mapping, remote sensing, numerical modelling and statistical analyses of debris flow events in Southwestern BC.
