Decades of tectonic geomorphology research showed that changing tectonic and climatic conditions modify the relief of fluvial channels. More recently, we came to appreciate that the same forcings can induce migration of drainage divides and significantly change the shape and size of drainage basins.

However, the inverse problem of inferring the tectonic and climatic histories from fluvial relief and drainage basin shape remains an outstanding challenge.

In this talk, I will present two studies that address this challenge. In the first part, I will present a formal linear inverse model that uses the relief along branching channel networks to infer the tectonic and climatic histories that shaped the channels. In the second part, I will present intriguing cases of drainage reversal by divide migration and discuss what we can learn from them about tectonic tilting and climatic cycles.
