Available Short-term Work Opportunities - Marine Conservation at Fisheries and Oceans Canada

The Marine Planning and Conservation Directorate at Fisheries and Oceans Canada is seeking possible candidates for 2 available positions with the Marine Conservation Operations team in the upcoming year. We are seeking 1-2 students at the graduate (masters) level for short-term, full-time work contracts during the Fall and/or Winter months of this fiscal year (2023-24). Ideal candidates have a keen interest in marine conservation, with an inter-disciplinary background in ocean sciences, social studies, policy and governance, geography, or resource and environmental management. While our Marine Conservation Operations team is based in Ottawa, we adopt a hybrid approach, meaning that we have the flexibility to make this a hybrid or a remote work opportunity! Students can gain a greater understanding of Canada’s management of our marine environments, participate in national working group meetings and virtual events, and get involved in work to advance ocean conservation.

The first opportunity is the standard student internship or co-op which would be full-time (37.5 hrs per week) and renumeration is in line with Government of Canada student pay rate (somewhere around $22/hour). Dates are flexible, for around 16 weeks, anytime from September to April. Students need to have reliability security clearance approved before they start (few forms + documents to submit – I can help with this!).  The students can learn and help advance internal government processes in relation to conservation, protected areas, and managing activities in the ocean space.

The second opportunity is a casual contract (90 days or less). This remote work opp would only be available to Masters level students (or recently graduated). Pay rate depends upon classification (which would be determined during the interview process) and it is the annual salary (for example between 55,000 – 75,000) pro-rated for the 90 days. For this contract, we are looking for someone with strong writing skills to help our team in developing recommendations, frameworks, and strategies, as well as succinct documents and presentations.
