Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Environmental Geoscience - University of New Brunswick

The University of New Brunswick, Department of Earth Sciences, invites applications for a continuing (tenure-track) position at the Assistant Professor level to commence Jan. 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter, subject to final budgetary approval.

The Department seeks to bolster its strength in environmental geoscience by hiring an outstanding candidate involved in the study of Quaternary or modern geological environments with applications in water resources, climate change, geotechnics, renewable energy or natural hazards. Disciplines of interest include surficial geology, geohydrology, glaciology, and remote sensing – all relevant to the measurement or modelling of geologically-mediated processes occurring in the Critical Zone where rock, soil, water, atmosphere, and ecosystems interact.

The successful candidate will demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching, in the classroom, lab and field, in our Earth Science, Environmental Geoscience, Environmental Science and Geological Engineering Programs. They will be expected to develop a robust, externally funded research program, supervise undergraduate and graduate students, and to engage with their colleagues in departmental initiatives/service.

Required qualifications include a PhD, clear potential for excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and a strong record or emerging strength in research and publications. Eligibilities for professional licensure in geoscience and in engineering would be assets for our professional programs.

‘Youth Climate Action’ Program Coordinator - Manitoba Museum

The Manitoba Museum’s “Youth Climate Action Project”, funded by the Canadian Association of Science Centres GenAction grant, will engage and evaluate K-12 learners in how their daily actions contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and improve youth access to local, Manitoba-based data on climate resilience, Indigenous science, justice, and action.

The candidate will have experience working with Indigenous communities; developing and delivering programs for youth and be a passionate advocate for climate justice.

This 2.5-year project will see the development and delivery of youth-centred programming that will raise awareness, build capacity, and improve understanding of climate change, as well as capture the impact of these programs through the GenAction evaluation framework and online tracker. The project encompasses a number of distinct activities for three youth audiences: schools; day camps; and youth public programs.

This position is full-time (35 hours) starting ASAP to October 2024, and will require evening and weekend work in order to engage with the target youth audience. Work hours may change depending on seasonal activities (i.e. school year) and special events/programs.

Junior Geologist/Geotech - Vizsla Copper Corp.

Vizsla Copper Corp. (VCU) is looking for a Junior Geologist/Geotech for its copper exploration projects in British Columbia. Reporting to the Company’s Project Manager, the Junior Geologist/Geotech will work with VCU’s team to assist on drill programs in search of economic copper deposits. The Junior Geologist/Geotech will complete geotechnical data acquisition, assist in collecting structural and petrophysical measurements as well as general core shack and camp duties as required. The start date for employment is the first week of July continuing until the end of August.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

You have a strong willingness to learn and ask questions as well as the desire to put what you’ve studied in school into practice. You are a well-rounded candidate with good organizational skills, enjoy working with your hands, a strong sense of responsibility, and enjoy working in a team environment. In addition, you have:

  • 0-2 years of relevant work experience, preferably including exploration for porphyry and VMS deposit styles
  • Working towards a degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution
  • A commitment to Health and Safety in the workplace
  • Ability to work in remote locations for extended periods of time
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and GIS packages (ArcGIS, QGIS) an asset

Job Opportunity in Data Science - Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy

Jeremy Krogh at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy is looking to hire someone on a six month contact. The ideal candidate would have experience with data analysis (R, Python, SQL) and a basic knowledge of chemistry. The job will be somewhat variable to match the candidate but the main task is to assist him with the migration of our environmental database to a new platform. The job has lots of data exploring components and is more exciting than it sounds.
